When starting your itinerary for your family trip to Korea, one of the first things you might start noticing is the atypical bed size for hotels in Korea.
In the states, booking a hotel room that fits a family of four is not really a challenge. Most hotel rooms have options for 2 Doubles, Queens, Kings and maybe even a pull out sofa option.
However, bed size for hotels in Korea may make it very difficult for a family of 4 to fit in 1 hotel room. We noticed that most hotel rooms only have 1 King or 2 twin sized bed options, which makes it impossible for 2 parents and 2 kids to stay in one room together. Strangely enough, a room that has a King sized bed claims to be able to fit 3 people on most hotel websites as well.
Here are some things to consider regarding bed size for hotels in Korea
Hotel rooms should be one of the first things to book after your flights

Scout the locations you’d like to visit and start skimming hotels immediately. There are hotels with the appropriate beds and sizes for your families but it will be slim pickings. Therefore, researching earlier will give you the most options as hotels are often booked far in advance by others. At first, I looked at brand named hotels like Lotte and Shilla, but noticed these hotels are the ones that usually do not have the bed sizes my family needs.
Find bed size for hotels in Korea with at least 2 double beds
As a family of 4, a hotel room with 1 King sized bed is not going to cut it for you. Unless the hotel can guarantee and you are willing to pay extra for the roll out bed, I would not waste your time and skip these hotel options. Instead, move on to hotels with 2 double bed options. These are the only room types that will feel most similar to 2 queen bed options you are used to in the States. Finding hotels with 2 queen beds will be very difficult to find.
What to do if you can only find hotel rooms with 2 twin beds
As a family of four, our kids are 4 and 6 years old and in most situations we were lucky to find hotel rooms with at least 2 double beds. However, there were also times we could only find 1 double and 1 twin bed or 2 twin bed options. Although this sleeping situation is not ideal, the twin bed was able to just about fit one adult and child. For reference, I am 5’3 in height and 130 pounds and my son is 4’ in height and 55 pounds.
Fortunately, neither of us are big movers while sleeping so we had very little issues with co-sleeping during our trip.
What if my kid falls off the twin bed?
Once upon a time, both my kids fell off of their QUEEN sized hotel beds during the same night. They never even fall out of their own beds at home, but for some reason they are prone to falling out of bed at hotels. To prevent this I always place some kind of barrier at the edge of the side the child will sleep on for extra safety and peace of mind. For this particular trip, I placed chairs right next to their side of the bed, their strollers, or if I could, even moved the bed next to the wall. If none of these options were available to us, I pulled out our travel sized bed rail. Basically anything that is higher than the bed edge to subconsciously remind their little bodies not to go further.

How can I tell if the twin bed will be big enough for 2?
It’s not an exact science and most hotels don’t provide bed size measurements, but I found comparing the pillow size relative to the bed width as a good indicator of how spacious a twin bed is. If you are looking at hotel room pictures on hotel websites or Tripadvisor, take a good look at if there is space left on both sizes of the one pillow displayed in the middle of the twin bed. If there is, an adult and young child should be able to fit surprisingly well.
Also, try to assess if the pillow displayed is a standard pillow or King sized pillow.
Finally, if you look hard enough there are a few hotels that provide a Korean style hotel room. This isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it is an alternative option. In these set ups, there is an area in the room where they will provide thick bedding so that you can sleep on the floor. As a reminder, an option like this exists because culturally Koreans do not wear shoes inside their homes. The floor will not be as questionable as an American hotel.
